British judoka Gemma Howell took silver at the Grand Prix in Tbilisi in 2016. She competed at World Championships and the 2012 Olympic Games U63kg. She won European Championships bronze in 2018 in Tel Aviv. She won World Cups in Bucharest and Tallinn in 2012 and Glasgow in 2014. She won European and World bronze junior medals U57kg. Gemma took bronze at the Grand Prix in Cancun in 2017, Tunis in 2018 and gold at the Grand Prix Budapest in 2019. Howell captured gold at the Grand Prix in Zagreb.

Great Britain’s record at Olympic Games level over the years has been equally as sketchy. To date they have won only eighteen Olympic medals in Judo since it was added to the Summer games schedule way back in 1964. Neil Adams is still the most successful British judoka after winning silver in the men’s U71 kg category in 1980 in Moscow, Russia, and again in the men’s U78 kg category in 1984 in Los Angeles, USA. Gemma Howell wins back-to-back Grand Prix

Budapest Grand Prix winner Gemma Howell (GBR) won her second IJF Grand Prix title in as many weeks as she beat three-time World Judo Masters winner Kim Polling (NED) in the U70kg final. Polling, who starred in the preliminaries with a powerful and focused showing, came undone against the Wolverhampton Judo Club product who hooked in for a waza-ari score as her mother Suzanne celebrated in the stands just as she did in Budapest. Gemma Howell keeps growing with gold in Budapest

Gemma Howell of Great Britain bested two-time world medallist Maria Bernabeu (ESP) to win her first IJF World Judo Tour title. Baku Grand Slam bronze medallist Howell has now put pressure on her U70kg teammate and Olympic bronze medallist Sally Conway (GBR) in the race for the one place for Tokyo 2020, after throwing powerful Spaniard Bernabeu for a waza-ari and then pinning her with a sankaku-gatame to clinch gold. World champion Chizuru Arai grabs sixth Grand Slam title

Two-time and reigning world champion Arai Chizuru of Japan won her sixth Grand Slam gold medal at the expense of Tel Aviv Grand Prix gold medallist Anna Bernholm (SWE). Arai, who is now undefeated on the IJF circuit since May 2018, fought like a world champion and will be the overwhelming favourite in Tokyo this August as she bids for a third consecutive title.
