Brazilian judoka Phelipe Pelim won 6 bronze World Cup medals in the Pan American area and bronze at the Grand Prix in Düsseldorf in 2015. Pelim won bronze at the FISU Universiade in Gwangju U60kg. At the European Open in Glasgow he took the gold in 2016. He won bronze at the Grand Prix in Düsseldorf in 2017. He won the Pan American Open in Lima and Santiago in 2017 and silver at the Grand Prix in Cancun. He claimed bronze at the Grand Prix in Tbilisi in 2017.

Francisco Garrigos of Spain won his first Grand Prix gold medal on day one in Mexico with a speedy win over three-time Grand Prix bronze medallist Phelipe Pelim (BRA). The 22-year-old European Championships bronze medallist has now topped the IJF medal podium at Grand Slam and Grand Prix events and is poised for a serious medal challenge at the World Championships this year. Top seeded athlete and home judoka Amiran Papinashvili (GEO) was expected to be in the final by the whole public of the New Sports Arena and he did not disappoint his fans as the -60kg Georgian qualified for the last fight of the category with a win over Albert Oguzov (RUS).
