Japanese heavyweight Ryu Shichinohe won the silver medal at the World Championships in 2014 and 2015 against Teddy Riner. He won the Grand Slam in Paris in 2014 and Grand Prix Ulaanbaatar (2014) and Dusseldorf in 2015. Won his first All Japanese title in 2012. He won silver at the Grand Slam in Paris in 2017.

Japan wins 8 of 9 finals at Asian Championships in Hong Kong

Japan became the winner of the Asian Championships in Hong Kong, capturing eight gold medals in the process. Japan's efficiency was evident by winning eight of nine finals. At the Grand Slam of Paris double world silver medallist Shichinohe Ryu toiled to silver as he was marginally outworked by Tokyo Grand Slam winner Ojitani Takeshi.
