Audrey Tcheumeo grabs gold in the Lion's den

Former French world champion Audrey Tcheumeo defeated world number three from Germany Luise Malzahn in the U78kg final in a final between two of the strongest candidates for Rio 2016 honours. World number two Tcheumeo defeated world number three Malzahn with a thumping osoto-gari earning waza-ari and the pair exchanged shido penalties as the former was penalised for stepping out and the latter was held accountable for being passive. Despite the defeat Malzahn won a record 16th Grand Prix medal of her career to become the most prolific medallist on the Grand Prix stage in judo. Read more

Current world bronze medallist Iakiv Khammo of the Ukraine has become one of the leading judoka in the heavyweight category at the age of 21 as he Ukrainian won his second Grand Prix gold medal with a riveting performance. World number 10 Khammo was penalised along with his opponent after 48 seconds for passivity before the youngster exploded into action as he launched a lightning quick left-sided osoto-gari which sent former world bronze medallist Islam El Shehaby of Egypt flying to the tatami for ippon. Two-time Brazilian world silver medallist Maria Suelen Altheman reigned at the Grand Prix of Dusseldorf as the Rio 2016 Olympic Games medal hope defeated world champion of China Yu Song in the +78kg final. Altheman threw Yu with a beautiful harai-goshi and then pinned down the Chinese fighter with a kuzure-kesa-gatame for 15 seconds to seal a superb win in 56 seconds. Read more
