Audrey Tcheumeo captured the European title in Montpellier. In the final she defeated Dutch Marhinde Verkerk. Tcheumeo who was European Champion in 2011 as well now regained the title for her own home crowd. Both athletes were satisfied though as it was the beginning of the Olympic period for Rio and a medal is satisfying.

Tcheumeo needed to full time to make the diference. Also in the semi final she had a tough opponent in Luise Malzahn of Germany and scored only in the dying seconds of the match. 2009 World Champion Verkerk also had a tough match in the semi final but was able to defeated 2012 European Champion Abigel Joo of Hungary.

It was Abigel Joo who won the bronze medals as well as 2013 European Champion Lucie Louette of France. Joo defeated that second Dutch athlete, Guusje Steenhuis for bronze, Steenhuis lost to Malzahn in the quarter final but is definitely a target for the future. Louette had lost to Verkerk but she came back like Steenhuis and booked victories at Dmitrieva (RUS) and Malzahn for bronze.

Tcheumeo defeated Alena Kacharovskaya in her first bout and progressed for gold via Ivana Maranic (CRO), Malzahn and Verkerk.
