Slowly Ana Velensek grew from winning European Cups to World Cups and in 2013 a Grand Prix. Not even a year later she turns out to be a medal contender for any world level event taking gold at the most prestigious tournament in the world, the Paris Grand Slam. Slovenian Velensek can not be seen as an outsider anymore.

Rijeka Grand Prix winner Ana Velensek abruptly ended the hopes of 20-year-old French Madeleine Malonga in the U78kg final after the young French ace embraced one of the sport’s greatest stages. Velensek defeated Junior World bronze medallist Malonga in 28 seconds by ippon from a harai-makikomi. In the first semi-final Velensek defeated Dutch prospect Guusje Streenhuis on shido penalties while France’s latest prodigy was impressive against Qingdao Grand Prix bronze medallist LI Xin (CHN) who fell by ippon from a kuzure-kesa-gatame.

The first bronze medal was won by 2009 world champion Marhinde Verkerk who beat Streenhuis on shido penalties with two against the Dutchwoman which was one more than her rival received. The second bronze medal went to another former world champion as Audrey Tcheumeo downed LI in 10 seconds with an emphatic tai-otoshi.
