Alan Khubetsov won gold at the Grand Prix in Zagreb in 2016. Khubetsov won the European Championships U23 in Prague in 2012. He won the Grand Slam in Baku in 2014 as first senior success and followed up with victories at the Grand Prix Astana (2014) and Tbilisi in 2015. He won gold at the Grand Prix in Tbilisi in 2016. In 2017 he became European Senior champion in Warsaw U81kg and took silver at the Grand Prix in Hohhot. He won bronze at the IJF Masters in St. Petersburg in 2017.

Russian Grand Prix expert Alan Khubetsov denied Japan in the final of the Budapest Grand Prix, the runaway leaders of the medal table, one more title in Hungary as he outfought Tunis Grand Prix bronze medallist Kohara Kenya (JPN) in the -81kg final. Olympic champion Khasan Khalmurzaev was crowned the U81kg World Judo Masters gold medallist after a domestic meeting with European bronze medallist Aslan Lappinagov (RUS) in the final. Khalmurzaev, Nagase or a surprise World Champion U81kg?

In the category U81kg there remains two big prospects for the World title in Budapest: Olympic Champion Khasan Khalmurzaev of Russia and World Champion Takanori Nagase of Japan.
