Kathrin Unterwurzacher retires after 12 year top career
Austrian top athlete Kathrin Unterwurzacher retires from international judo. The 28-year two-time European Championships medalist and 2016 Olympian announced to quite her career as a sports soldier and competitive athlete. After 12 years in the Austrian national team she has to retire due to a damaged right knee. Unterwurzacher: "The pain is too severe. My right knee no longer allows top positions." Read more

Fourth World Tour victory for Natalie Powell
The first female final of the third day at the Grand Prix in Tel Aviv pitted the 17th in the World Ranking List, winner of the Tashkent Grand Prix in 2019, Bernadette Graf (AUT), with the 2017 world bronze medalist, Natalie Powell (GBR). It took less than two minutes for Natalie Powell to complete a smoothly led final, thanks to a first waza-ari from a harai-goshi and a flawless ippon via o-uchi-gari. It is the third gold medal at a Grand Prix for Powell. Read more

Bernadette Graf on her way back with second gold
Austria’s Bernadette Graf captured the gold medal at the Grand Prix in Tashkent U78kg. It was her second victory in the IJF World Tour in her “new” weight class U78kg. In total it was her fifth Grand Prix gold medal. Graf wins a World Cup almost each year except last year. This time however she already won twice. Women's coach Patrick Rusch cannot complain about his successful start since the World Championships. Read more

Marko Spittka no longer Austrian head coach
With less than a year to go, Austria relieved Marko Spittka of his job as head coach. Spittka was coach since 2013 and the face of Austrian judo. The decision was taken by the board of the Austrian Judo Federation, one month in advance of the most important qualification tournament for the Games. Read more

Dutch women defend European Games title
The Netherlands won three gold medals at the first European Games edition in 2015 in Baku. Marhinde Verkerk was the winner U78kg. The Dutch have always had a strong line-up in this class and since that period Guusje Steenhuis took over the lead in this division. The former World number one faced some injuries but seems back in time for a good campaign in the road to Tokyo with stepping stones in Minsk, Tokyo, Prague in 2020. Read more
