Ruika Sato won her first Grand Slam in 2010 in Rio, followed by the Grand Slam victory in Tokyo. She collected more than 10 international medals at Grand Prix and Grand Slams, all U78kg. Sato won World Junior bronze in 2008 U78kg. National champion in 2013 and 2014. Silver at the Paris Grand Slam. She won the Grand Slam in Tokyo in 2016. She won silver at the Grand Slam in Paris and Grand Prix bronze in 2017 in Hohhot. She won bronze at the Grand Slam in Tokyo in 2017 and Düsseldorf in 2018.

At the third day of the Grand Slam in Düsseldorf Mikhail Igolnikov was the sensation of the day. For the first time in his career he won a World Tour event. Not just that, but he defeated Olympic Champion Mashu Baker in the final U90kg. Also Mashu Baker was an outperformer today with excellent judo. Read more

Ruika Sato of Japan won her fourth Grand Slam title with a key win over world champion Mayra Aguiar of Brazil who had to open her season with a silver medal. Sato employed her usual combative style which put her Brazilian rival under pressure from the opening seconds which appeared to unsettle the owner of the red backpatch in the U78kg category. Asian Championships winner Hamada Shori won her first Grand Slam gold medal in a category where Japan have had mixed success and several judoka can lay claim to being their the hosts’ best option at U78kg. Hamada is the latest judoka to cast their name forward as the fighter to call on at this weight as the 27-year-old, who has been infrequently exposed to the IJF World Judo Tour, won all five of her contests by ippon including the final against world number two Guusje Steenhuis (NED). A Strong Japanese team is expected to shine at the Grand Slam in Tokyo this weekend. Nonetheless in the latest moment to World Champions fell off the roster as current U100kg World Champion Aaron Wolf was replaced by Daiki Nishiyama in his new category. 2015 World Champion Ryunosuke Haga will be replaced by Yusuke Kumashiro, both U100kg. Mayra Aguiar becomes double world champion

The U78kg world title returned to Brazil as Mayra Aguiar topped the World Championships medal podium for the second time. Aguiar, who won the Worlds in 2014 in Chelyabinsk, had power, precision and poise and should not control the category on the road to the Tokyo 2020 Olympics which would be her third Games. Read more
