Brazilian judoka Rafael Silva is the former #1 of the world. The heavyweight won two Olympic bronze medals in 2012 in London and in Rio 2016. He won world bronze in 2017 in Budapest. He won many international titles such as 2 World Championships medals in 2013 and 2014 and Grand Slam in Tyumen in 2014. He won bronze at the Grand Slam in Paris in 2017. He took a bronze medal at the IJF Masters in St. Petersburg in 2017 and Grand Slam in Ekaterinburg in 2018.

Japanese youngster Ota Hyoga of Japan won the last final of the Ekaterinburg Grand Slam 2018 with a narrow win triumph over former European champion Henk Grol (NED) at +100kg. Georgian European champion Guram Tushishvili made it three-for-three for Georgia as his country won the U90kg, U100kg and +100kg titles at the IJF World Masters in St. Petersburg.
