Jorge Fonseca took a silver medal at the Grand Prix in Zagreb in 2017. He lives in Portugal, but from Sao Tome and Principe (STP) in Africa and with intervention of the IJF he was able to fight for Portugal and booked many successes such as the European U23 title and top medals at the main events. He won bronze at the Grand Slam in Paris in 2017. He took a bronze medal at the Grand Slam in Düsseldorf in 2018. He took a bronze medal at the Grand Prix Tbilisi in 2018.

The U100kg weight category at the Grand Prix in Zagreb proposed a particularly high level of top class judoka, but surprisingly the top three athletes of the category, Elkhan Mammadov (AZE), Elmar Gasimov (AZE) and Varlam Liparteliani (GEO) were eliminated during the preliminary rounds opening the road to less well ranked athletes to reach the final, which opposed the explosive Jorge Fonseca (POR) and Cirjenics Miklos of Hungary.
