Jorge Fonseca became 2019 World Champion in the Budokan in Tokyo. He was born in Sao Tome and Principe (STP) in Africa. He booked many successes such as the European U23 title and 17 medals in the IJF World Tour. He won bronze at Grand Slams in Paris, Düsseldorf and Osaka. Jorge won the Champions League with Sporting Clube Portugal Lisbon in 2018. In 2019 he took bronze at the GP in Zagreb. With Portugal he took silver in the mixed team competition. Portugal’s first ever judo World Champion.

Portuguese powerhouse Jorge Fonseca struck IJF World Judo Tour gold at his 46th attempt and achieved it in dream fashion at the blue ribbon event on the international circuit. Fonseca, 26, had lost Grand Prix finals in 2017 and 2018 which stood as his best results on the IJF stage until his career-making day at the Nippon Budokan in August. Read more

Shady El Nahas delivered gold for Canada at the Grand Prix in Zagreb as the youngster went one better than his result at home earlier this month. The 21-year-old Montreal Grand Prix silver medallist, who exploded onto the scene by taking a stunning silver medal at the Osaka Grand Slam last year, has progressed from being a raw talent into being an elite judoka and showed that by overcoming Antalya Grand Prix winner Alexandre Iddir (FRA) in golden score with a juji-gatame.
