Jorge Fonseca became 2019 World Champion in the Budokan in Tokyo. He was born in Sao Tome and Principe (STP) in Africa. He took the European U23 title and 17 medals in the IJF World Tour. He won bronze at Grand Slams in Paris, Düsseldorf and Osaka. Jorge won the Champions League with Sporting Clube Portugal Lisbon in 2018 and 2019. In 2019 he took bronze at the GP in Zagreb. With Portugal he took silver in the mixed team competition. Portugal’s first ever judo World Champion.

Deguchi and Fonseca wrote history for their countries

Both judoka Christa Deguchi (CAN) and Jorge Fonseca (POR) earned their country’s first world judo titles and in doing so wrote their names into the history books. Deguchi won four of her five contests by ippon and beat former teammate and defending world champion Yoshida Tsukasa (JPN) in the final by a waza-ari score from a tani-otoshi. Read more

It's not easy to find the pace to deliver each event over and over again. American judoka Chantal Wright is the athlete with most Olympic qualification events without reaching the quarter finals. In 13 World Cups she couldn’t reach the last eight, meaning quarter final or repechage match. Taciana Cesar, Aisha Gurbanli and Alexandru Raicu were also a bit unlucky in their first rounds. Jorge Fonseca survived his darkest period in life

At 30 August Jorge Fonseca became the first man to become World Champion for Portugal. Suddenly all the work and efforts were paid out in a medal. Besides the extraordinary achievement, it was very special because of a his physical condition a few years ago where Fonseca was diagnosed with cancer. Read more
