Korean judoka Ji-Youn Kim won the Universiade in Shenzhen (Student World Championships) in 2011 in the open class. She collected 4 World Cup victories in Jeju (2), Ulaanbaatar and Taipei and won bronze at the Grand Slam in Paris in 2013 and Grand Prix Düsseldorf. She won the Grand Prix in Samsun.

Top seeded and world number 8, Svitlana Iaromka (UKR) had a perfect start of the Grand Prix in Samsun until she was defeated by the Korean Kim Ji-Youn in the semi-final. The last win for Kim on the occasion of a Grand Prix was in 2014 (Jeju). In the final she was opposed to the surprise of the day, Melissa Mojica (PUR), who was coached by Jessica Garcia, who we interviewed yesterday as she just finished the first level of the IJF Academy. Two-time Brazilian world silver medallist Maria Suelen Altheman reigned at the Grand Prix of Dusseldorf as the Rio 2016 Olympic Games medal hope defeated world champion of China Yu Song in the +78kg final. Altheman threw Yu with a beautiful harai-goshi and then pinned down the Chinese fighter with a kuzure-kesa-gatame for 15 seconds to seal a superb win in 56 seconds. Read more
