World vice Champion 2015 Maria Bernabeu developed well since 2015 with World silver in Astana and she claimed bronze at the 2017 World Championships in Budapest. She won the Grand Prix in Budapest U70kg, her first IJF medal and Grand Slam in Baku in 2016. She won gold at the Grand Prix in Cancun in 2017. Bernabeu won bronze at the European U23 in 2010 and European junior bronze in 2006. Five Spanish titles. She finished fifth at the Olympic Games in Rio.

The gold for women U70kg was for Haruka Tachimoto, where she failed in 2012 in London, she came back strongly this time. What a turbulent Olympic cycle it has been for Tachimoto who could in fact almost forget qualification in February 2015 due to an incident, but came back slowly and won everything what she had to win to qualify. World silver medallist Maria Bernabeu (ESP) returned to the IJF World Judo Tour medal podium in Baku for the first time since her heroics at the sport’s 2015 marquee event in Astana, Kazakhstan. Bernabeu blasted past Havana Grand Prix bronze medallist Maria Portela (BRA) in the final as she surprisingly overpowered the Brazilian in osaekomi for 20 seconds with a sankaku-gatame hold.
