Judoka Gella Vandecaveye answers Belgium’s comeback call

Women’s U63 Judo World Champion Gella Vandecaveye retired in January 2004 and had a lot of fun since then. Because of the qualification points she had earned in 2003, she was still invited for the Athens Olympic Games and now makes her comeback.

She had not even considered a comeback, until the people of Belgium cried out for her comeback. She is now her nation’s hope and will compete out of loyalty for the people of Belgium. The Olympic title is the only major honour she has not yet won.

Background:
After her career she thought she already started since January Gella Vandecaveye only did nice things like skydiving, climbing mountains and did serious climbs on her bike like serious pieces of ‘De Ronde van Vlaanderen/Flanders Round’ more than twice a week. Her training Eddy Vinckier said about this: “It’s interesting that she always had trouble with keeping her weight. Now that she has her bike as an alternative training after she retired from judo, it looks like she doesn’t have any troubles anymore with her weight. Even one month before the start of the Olympic Games, she already has her matchweight of 63kgs and looks fitter than ever. I think with this alternative training she burns even more than the usual judo training. Sure enough, she will never quit sports. She’s a sports nut.
