Russia takes triple gold at opening day in Tel Aviv

Russian athletes claimed three gold medals on the opening day of action at the European Judo Championships in Tel Aviv. Irina Dolgova got the ball rolling for Russia in the women's U48 kilogram category with a waza-ari win over London 2012 bronze medallist Éva Csernoviczki of Hungary.

The bronze medal was shared by Ukraine's Maryna Cherniak and Serbia's Milica Nikolic.

Rio 2016 bronze medallist Natalia Kuziutina claimed Russia’s second gold medal of the day thanks to an ippon victory against Distria Krasniqi of Kosovo in the women’s U52kg competition

Switzerland's Evelyne Tschopp and Gefen Primo of host nation Israel shared bronze.

Russia's final gold medal of the day was secured by Islam Yashuev, a gold medallist at the European U23 championships in 2014, thanks to his victory in the men's U60kg, which he secured by beating Bulgaria's Yanislav Gerchev with an ippon.

Yashuev's compatriot Beslan Mudranov and Ashley McKenzie of Great Britain shared bronze.

Today’s other men’s competition saw Adrian Gomboc of Slovenia come out on top in the men’s U66kg thanks to a win over Italy's Matteo Medves, which was secured by an ippon.

Home athlete Tall Flicker and Belarus' Dzmitry Shershan shared bronze.

The final event of the day was the women’s U57kg, which was won by 2015 European Games bronze medallist Nora Gjakova of Kosovo thanks to an ippon.

Russia's Anastasiia Konkina and Portugal's Telma Monteiro shared bronze.

The event continues tomorrow with the women's U63kg and U70kg competitions along with the men's U73kg and U81kg bouts.

For Azerbaijan’s five-man team in Tashkent he not only rediscovered his medal winning touch but made a breakthrough on the Grand Prix stage for the first time. Golden Chkhvimiani takes gold on home soil

Top seeded athlete and home judoka Amiran Papinashvili (GEO) was expected to be in the final by the whole public of the New Sports Arena and he did not disappoint his fans as the -60kg Georgian qualified for the last fight of the category with a win over Albert Oguzov (RUS). The final produced a 100% Georgian show as the second athlete qualified was Lukhumi Chkhvimiani, also from the host country. Read more


Japan and Korea take the gold medals at European Open in Rome

Taikoh Fujisaka of Japan won the European Open for men U60kg in Rome. The 20-year old defeated Russian Islam Yashuev in the final. Fujisaka had to win all five battles to get the gold in the Palla Pellicone. Fujisaka is used to the European level of competition; during his junior period, he competed a few times in Europe with notable success. French Vincent Limare and Oruj Valizada (AZE) grabbed the bronze. Limare lost his semi final to the Russian fighter and Valizada lost to Fujisaka. Read more
