Judoka from Japan Abe Uta became World Champion in 2018 at the same day as her brother Hifumi Abe. In 2019 she prolonged the world title in Tokyo. Abe was already Junior World Champion in 2017. She won the Grand Slam of Paris in 2018. She took gold at the Grand Slam Osaka in 2018. In 2017 she won the Grand Prix Düsseldorf 2017 as youngest ever winner of a IJF World Tour event. She won the World Junior Mixed Team Championships in 2017. World Mixed team gold in Tokyo in 2019.

The final Grand Slam of the season sees a return to the sport’s homeland and Osaka. Abe Uta, Sone and Maruyama are on the verge of Tokyo 2020 selection. World champions Abe Uta (-52kg), Sone Akira (+78kg) and Maruyama Joshiro (-66kg) will seal selection for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics if they win gold at the Osaka Grand Slam. Read more

At the second day of the Judo World Championships in Tokyo the favourites have progress to the final phase. Especially in the women’s tournament all big names were able to stand the pressure. French world number one Amandine Buchard will now face Rio bronze medallist Natalia Kuziutina of Russia in the first semi-final, followed by a super clash between Majlinda Kelmendi of Kosovo and Uta Abe.
