Ai Shishime wins the Masters at her first attempt

Former world champion Shishime Ai of Japan defeated world number one Amandine Buchard (FRA) to win World Judo Masters gold as she holds on to her feint hope of selection for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. Shishime, who is behind double world champion Abe Uta (JPN) in the Japanese pecking order, made sure that Buchard ended her day on the losing side of a Masters final for the third time. Read more

France dominates first European Open in Luxembourg

The French team was just amazing at the European Open in Luzembourg. At the first edition of a Euro Open in the small country close to France, the French athletes took 10 out of the 14 gold medals. Germany, Hungary, Azerbaijan and neighbor Belgium captured gold as well. Besides that the French captured 29 medals. Only five countries with a gold medal doesn’t happen so often, the last time was at the Grand Slam in Osaka in 2018 where Japan dominated. In Luxembourg it was clearly France. Read more

Odette Giuffrida regains the Tbilisi title

Olympic silver medallist Odette Giuffrida of Italy defeated Israelian Gili Cohen to win U52kg gold. Both judoka had struck Grand Prix gold on one occasion previously and for both their victories were in Tbilisi. Giuffrida added to her 2016 Tbilisi win by catching 2014 winner and Ekaterinburg Grand Slam winner Cohen with ashi-waza as a de-ashi-barai earned a second and match-winning waza-ari. Read more
