Kazakh judoka Rustam Ibrayev won the Grand Slam in Baku in 2015. He took a few World Cup bronze medals, but the Grand Slam bronze in Tokyo was one of his highlights. Sensational victory Elios Manzi at Grand Prix Almaty

Italian sensation Elios Manzi captured the gold medal in at the Grand Slam in Almaty. His opponent in the final against Kazach home favourite Rustam Ibrayev. The European bronze medallist Elios Manzi, again showed great judo and the Italian youngster and was able to defeat Sharafuddin Lutfillaev in the semi final. Read more

Challengers take the opportunity at Almaty Grand Prix

Elio Manzi again showed great judo and the Italian youngster qualified for the final U60kg at the Grand Prix of Almaty. Manzi will face number one seed Rustam Ibrayev, the world’s number two of last World Championships. Ibrayev is the favourite but Manzi showed he is not afraid of anyone. Both Uzbek favourites Lutfillaev and Urozboyev are both in the bronze finals against Kazach opponents Imashev and Telmanov. Read more

Loic Pietri back in business at Grand Prix Almaty

At this week’s Grand Prix of Almaty some of the last points are for grab, but it won’t be easy for the 399 participants. The category U81kg is as usual the most competitive with 45 participants and includes the comeback of 2013 World Champion Loic Pietri. The Frenchman may face home boy Aziz Kalkamanuly or dare devil Frank de Wit in his first fight. Many competitors are in that same pool for those last points to secure qualification. Pietri won World silver in Astana last year, so he is still the favourite and nearly almost medals where he starts. Read more

European Games bronze medallist Amiran Papinashvili of Georgia pipped Junior world silver medallist Tsendochir Tsogtbaatar (MGL) in the first men’s final in Abu Dhabi. Tsendochir, 19, who won four of his five contests a week ago at the Junior World Championships, fell behind to a waza-ari before pulling back a yuko by countering a trademark pick up attempt from the Georgian. Who would have thought about an all Kazakhstan World Championships final. Not in the most wet dreams the average judo fan, not even JudoInsiders would have seriously thought about that. Yeldos Smetov and Rustam Ibrayev made that dream come true. A tremendous boost for the organization, for the tournament and World Judo with such success in a country that is known for its wealth in oild and uranium. Although the commodities have fallen, judo is rising and today it was the best possible export of sports wealth. Read more
