Portuguese judoka Celio Dias was successful as a junior. He won the African Open in 2015 but surprised with a huge success winning the Grand Prix Budapest U90kg. Coached by Joao Pina and Joao Neto. In 2015 he won bronze at the Grand Slam of Paris Grand Prix in Tbilisi and Budapest in 2016.

Hungarian 2014 world silver medallist Toth Krisztian thrilled the home fans as he made sure that the Hungarian anthem would be heard at the Papp László Sportaréna in Budapest. Toth, 22, warmed up for his first Olympic Games, where he will be one of the top seeds, with a powerful display which ended with a decisive win over World Judo Masters bronze medallist Mihael Zgank of Slovenia in the final. The triple Olympian qualified for her fourth edition, but fell out of the top 8 seeded players due to her injury. Almost five months after having an operation to her left knee she returns. The Portuguese Judo Federation announced its team for the 2016 Olympic Games. This time Telma Monteiro is not seeded for Rio. An injury at the end of the year prevented her from fighting so far in 2016. Her last event was the Grand Slam of Paris in October 2015. The Portuguese star will go for her fourth Olympic Games, she debuted in 2004 in Athens and fought eight Olympic contests so far, but was much more ambitious. Dutchman Noel Van ‘t End had the measure of the dangerous Dusseldorf Grand Prix winner Marcus Nyman from Sweden as he continued his country’s golden streak at the Grand Prix of Tbilisi. Van ‘t End scored a yuko and a waza-ari before Nyman offered a purposeful attack but when he did the Dutchman was moving through the air from a sasae-tsurikomi-ashi but avoided giving away a score. The Abu Dhabi Grand Slam silver medallist has a cool demeanour and kept active and alert as he maintained his advantage to take gold. Read more

Varlam Liparteliani for the third time at Paris podium

Georgian World bronze medallist Varlam Liparteliani stepped onto the Paris Grand Slam podium for the third year in a row as he defeated former Tashkent Grand Prix winner Alexandre Iddir. Frenchman Iddir had had never won a Grand Slam medal before today while Liparteliani took silver here a year ago and gold in 2013. Georgia’s first and only medal of the Paris Grand Slam turned out to be gold as Liparteliani countered a weak attack from his opponent to produce a yuko in golden score after the contest was scoreless after the initial five minutes.
