Mayra Aguiar of Brazil became World Champion in 2017 in Budapest and in 2014 in Chelyabinsk U78kg. She won five World Championships medals and Aguiar won Olympic Games bronze in Rio in 2016 and London 2012. She took the World Junior Championships U20 in 2010 in Agadir. She won bronze at the World Championships in 2011 in Paris. In 2016 Aguiar won the Grand Slam in Paris. At her comeback in 2017 she won the Grand Prix in Cancun in 2017 as warmup for her second world title.

The Abu Dhabi Grand Slam this week will feature a number of interesting ingredients looking at the women’s division. World Champions Sumiya Sorjsuren (MGL) and Mayra Aguiar (BRA) will be fighting. Abu Dhabi Title defenders Otgontsetseg Galbadrakh (KAZ), Guusje Steenhuis (NED) and Maria Suelen Altheman (BRA) are present and Olympic Champions Paula Pareto (ARG) and Rafaela Silva (BRA) will show their best. Eight new World Ranking leaders set Japan back to the top

On Monday the new IJF World Ranking was released with eight new world ranking leaders. Soichi Hashimoto (U73kg) and Sumiya Dorjsuren (U57kg) were number one last week and also won the world title. It’s not about the ranking but about the performance. Mayra Aguiar becomes double world champion

The U78kg world title returned to Brazil as Mayra Aguiar topped the World Championships medal podium for the second time. Aguiar, who won the Worlds in 2014 in Chelyabinsk, had power, precision and poise and should not control the category on the road to the Tokyo 2020 Olympics which would be her third Games. Read more
