Mayra Aguiar of Brazil became World Champion in 2017 in Budapest and in 2014 in Chelyabinsk U78kg and silver in 2010. World bronze medallist in 2011, 2013 and 2019. In total six World Championships medals and Aguiar won Olympic Games bronze in Rio in 2016 and London 2012. She took the World Junior Championships U20 in 2010 in Agadir. She won bronze at the World Championships in 2011 in Paris. In 2016 Aguiar won the Grand Slam in Paris. She took gold at the Grand Prix in Budapest in 2019.

Former world champion Hamada Shori (JPN) dominated double Olympic bronze medallist Mayra Aguiar (BRA) to win her second Grand Slam gold medal. Hamada extended her winning record against the Brazilian to 3-0 by pinning down Aguiar for 20 seconds with a yoko-shiho-gatame. Read more

The Grand Slam is back in Brazil. The capital city Brasilia will host the Grand Slam for the first time since six years and is set to captivate the world from Sunday 6 to Tuesday 8 October. Following the 2013 World Championships in Rio de Janeiro, the last IJF event in the country, came the Rio 2016 Olympics. Brazil has hosted the World Championships three times (1965, 2007 and 2013), a Grand Slam, in Rio, on four occasions (2009, 2010, 2011 and 2012) and once a standalone World Team Championships in Salvador (2012). Malonga seals France’s third gold medal in as many days

Madeleine Malonga is the new World Champion U78kg. In the Budokan in Tokyo the French woman defeated defending world champion Hamada Shori of Japan who conceded her world crown to Malonga. The French team now captured three gold medal. Malonga followed the success of her teammates Clarisse Agbegnenou (U63kg) and Marie Eve Gahie (U70kg) who won gold on Wednesday and Thursday respectively. Read more

Japan understands the art of winning a final

Winning finals is a quality. Just a gut feeling says that the Japanese understand that quality really well. Zooming into the stats, just confirms that the Japanese are true masters taking the gold in a final. Obviously Japan is the most successful nation and they take a lot of medals, so they also lost a few contests. Still the distribution of gold in finals is positively balanced by the Japanese.
