Russian judoka Ekaterina Valkova won the African Open in Port Louis in 2015. She won silver at the European Open in Minsk. Valkova won bronze at the 2015 Grand Slam Tokyo. She took silver at the Grand Slam in Tyumen in 2014 and bronze in Moscow in 2012 and Grand Prix Düsseldorf 2016. Valkova was Russian champion in 2015. In 2017 she won silver at the Grand Slam in Ekaterinburg and bronze at the Grand Prix in Tashkent in 2017. With Yewara Newa she won the Golden League in 2017 in Ankara.

Austria’s Unterwurzacher bounces back after Worlds blip

Austrian middleweight Kathrin Unterwurzacher returned to form in Tashkent with a sixth Grand Prix gold medal to go some way to making amends for her early exit at August’s World Championships. Trajdos tops Grand Slam podium to boost Worlds intentions

German judoka Martyna Trajdos topped the Grand Slam medal podium in Russia to cast herself forward as one of the top contenders for the World Championships. Tokyo 2015 Grand Slam winner Trajdos, 28, held down former European bronze medallist Ekaterina Valkova of Russia for 20 seconds for her 10th Grand Slam medal and most important to date. Read more

The first day of the Grand Slam in Ekaterinburg delivered quite some surprises but an equal distribution of the final position among a number of strong judo nations. The Russian athletes showing good results, especially in the women’s categories where they seemed to get more grip to take some of the medals this year. Russian judo team uncertain about participation in Rio

The IOC is discussing a possible complete ban for the Russian team for the Olympic Games for all sports. The discussion follows due to the release of Richard McLaren's Independent Commission report into alleged state-sponsored doping during the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympics, as well as in competitions in summer sports. Russia should be banned from all international sporting competition, including the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, until they have achieved a "culture change", the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) has said.
