Russian judoka Denis Iartcev claimed a bronze medal at the 2019 World Championships in Tokyo. Denis finished 7th at the 2016 Olympic Games. He won the Grand Prix in Düsseldorf in 2017. Iartcev won the Universiade in Shenzhen (Student World Championships) in 2011 and European Games bronze in 2015. He won the IJF World Masters in Rabat in 2015. He clinched gold at the Grand Prix in Marrakech in 2019. With Yewara Newa he won the Golden League in 2017. He took bronze at the Grand Prix in Zagreb.

Russian sport heavily penalised with four year ban by WADA

Russia is on course to have its presence and participation in international sport severely curtailed for four years, after World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) leaders today endorsed the recommendations of the Agency’s Compliance Review Committee (CRC). But the sanctions stop short of a blanket ban on Russian athletes. WADA said the decision was unanimous. The latest ban leaves the door open for Russian athletes, who can prove they are not tainted by the scandal, to compete as neutral athletes. Read more

Israelian Tohar Butbul earned his first IJF World Judo Tour gold medal by beating Osaka Grand Slam silver medallist Arthur Margelidon (CAN) in the U73kg final of the Grand Prix in Zagreb. Russia defeats Portugal in nail-biting mixed team final

Russia needed to pull out all stops to win gold against an unfancied Portugal as the judo competition of the Minsk 2019 European Games concluded with the mixed team event. While Russia was the favourite and advanced easily to the final with wins over Turkey, Serbia and Belarus, Portugal came out of nowhere to send France to the repechage and beat the Netherlands in the semi-final.
