Polish judoka Sylwester Gawel won the Dutch Open 's-Hertogenbosch U90kg in 1999. He won the US Open in 2006 and was a national champion in Poland. In 1998 he took bronze at the Grand Prix Città di Roma. He is a multiple medallist at Polish Championships, Polish Open and New York Open. He lives in the USA as a business man and he became Director of the IJF Judo Store in 2024 as one of his projects. Throughout his career he fought with Olympians such as Huizinga, Despaigne, Jeon, Gordon, Borderieux, Demontfaucon, Nakamura, Olson among others.
