Egyptian judoka Islam El Shehaby was 9 times African Champion 2002-2013 and he was World bronze medallist in 2010 in Tokyo. El Shehaby won 18 World Cup medals and achieved victories in Abu Dhabi, Dusseldorf, Cairo, Moscow, Qingdao and Baku. In 2016 silver at the Grand Prix in Düsseldorf. Islam El Shehaby (EGY) was number 1 of the IJF World Ranking for seniors O100kg in 2010.

African Judo Championships help qualifying for Rio2016

Athletes from 31 nations will fight for the essential Qualification Points to participate at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio. The African Championships in Tunis are more important than ever and in the 14 weight classes each point can help the athletes to Rio. Last year at the African Championships the current host Tunisia was amazingly strong picking 50% of all 16 available medals including Open category. Current world bronze medallist Iakiv Khammo of the Ukraine has become one of the leading judoka in the heavyweight category at the age of 21 as he Ukrainian won his second Grand Prix gold medal with a riveting performance. World number 10 Khammo was penalised along with his opponent after 48 seconds for passivity before the youngster exploded into action as he launched a lightning quick left-sided osoto-gari which sent former world bronze medallist Islam El Shehaby of Egypt flying to the tatami for ippon. At the last day of the Grand prix in Düsseldorf the home crowd gets what it deserves, two German finallists Luise Malzahn and Dimitri Peters. Especially Luise Malzahn was the expected judoka in the final block. In a top final she will face French nemesis Audrey Tcheumeo. The former World Champion and 2012 Olympic medallist defeated Malzahn six times, but the last match became a victory for Malzahn in the match for bronze at the World Championships in Astana.
