Benjamin Fletcher captures first ever World Tour gold for Ireland

The switch to Ireland delivered a payout on Sunday at the last day of the Grand Prix in Tunis when Benjamin Fletcher claimed the gold medal U100kg. He is the only man for Ireland ever to take a victory in any World Cup. Only Lisa Kearney had won four World Cups in the past, but never a gold medal in the IJF World Tour. Read more

But the Tunisian giant was prematurely eliminated by the Japanese Sato Kazuya (JPN) and could not go through the repechages. Belarussian heavyweight Maryna Slutskaya made a successful comeback at the Grand Prix in Tunis capturing gold. Slutskaya got injured at home at the European Open in Minsk. She couldn’t compete at the World Championships in Budapest and took the time for a well times comeback. Today was the day and with success she claimed gold. Read more

The first men's final of the third day of the Grand Prix in Tunis was no surprise as top seed and 2014 world silver medallist Toth Krisztian (HUN) was opposed to number two and Baku Grand Slam winner in 2017, Islam Bozbayev (KAZ). The first attack came from Bozbayev who applied a masterpiece of tai-otoshi, like the one you learn at the judo club for a perfect ippon.
