Astana stat: Unique situation, No European in the quarter final
Together with our partner Lesprit du Judo JudoInside will publish the stat of the day. In today's quarter finals for men U60kg, Europe was missing, pretty akward for the leading judo continent in the world, isn't it? It was for the first time ever that no European judoka qualfied for the last 8 at a World Championship.
Although the Asian countries traditionally dominate this division, Europeans always take a medal. But not just in this lightweight category, but never it occured since the start of the current weightclasses in 1998 that Europe hadn't qualified. JudoInside digged into the archives and concluded that the World Championships in 2010 it happened that Europe had just one representative, who else than Teddy Riner who was the only European fighter in theopen category, which he actually lost. As you may remember this was his last loss against Daiki Kamikawa.
This 2010 edition was heavily dominated by Japan, but they failed at the Olympic Games two years later. In the women's +78kg class, also just one European was left among 6 Asians, and Idalys Ortiz, the current World and Olympic champion. The European heavyweight was Polish Urszula Sadkowska, who finished 7th. Today the poorest situation in one category happened in Astana.
In the women's U48 class Europe also didn't win a medal, with one 5th place by Cherniak and seventh ranks by Csernoviczky and Ungureanu, Europe hadn't much luck. Let's see in the next few days, which are more European oriented.
Today Asia and especially PanAmerica dominated. For the first time since 2005 the Pan Americans won gold, Europe hadn't won gold since 1991 in this class, says enough.
