Idalys Ortiz, the legendary Cuban judoka, is set to captivate the world once more as she represents Cuba as a flagbearer at the Paris Olympic Games. Born in 1989, in Candelaria, Cuba, Ortiz has become a towering figure in the world of judo, both figuratively and literally, standing 180 cm tall. Her illustrious career started at the tender age of nine. Now she is a big woman, tip top on the mat and outside, nails nicely decorated in the flag of her country. Idalys Ortiz is the trailblazer for Cuban judo.

Ortiz' early promise was evident, and it wasn't long before she made her mark on the international stage. Ortiz's career is highlighted by her remarkable performances at the Olympic Games. She is a four-time Olympic medallist in the +78 kg category, winning gold in London 2012, silver in both Rio de Janeiro 2016 and Tokyo 2020, and bronze in Beijing 2008. This achievement places her among the elite few who have medalled in four consecutive Olympics, sharing this honor with judo legends like Angelo Parisi, Teddy Riner, and her compatriot Driulis Gonzalez.

In addition to her Olympic success, Ortiz has also shone brightly at the IJF World Championships, amassing eight medals, including two golds in 2013 and 2014. She has consistently been a formidable competitor, securing silver medals in 2018 and 2019, and six bronze medals across various championships. Her ability to maintain such a high level of performance over many years is a testament to her skill and dedication.

Ortiz's achievements extend beyond the Olympics and World Championships. She has claimed 40 World Cup medals, including 32 on the World Judo Tour, and has achieved victories in ten different cities. Her dominance in the Pan American region is unparalleled, with four Pan American Games titles (2011, 2015, 2019, and 2023) and an astounding 14 Pan American Championships titles from 2007 to 2019.

Despite the challenges faced by the Cuban judo team in recent years, Ortiz remains a beacon of hope and excellence. Alongside teammates like Andy Granda, Maylin del Toro, and Ivan Silva Morales, she continues to inspire and lead by example. Their former coach, Ronaldo Veitia, a legendary figure in Cuban judo, will undoubtedly be watching proudly from above.

Ortiz's journey in judo has been shaped by her early beginnings and the strong support of her coaches, including Yordanis Arencibia. Her training regimen is rigorous, reflecting her commitment to maintaining peak performance. Known for her powerful techniques and strategic prowess, Ortiz has been a consistent force in her weight category.

Her sporting philosophy, "Where there is effort there is always accomplishment," resonates deeply with her career. It is this relentless effort that has earned her a place among the judo greats. As she prepares for her fifth Olympic appearance in Paris, joining the ranks of other judo legends making their fifth appearance, Ortiz's legacy is firmly cemented.

Ortiz's influence extends beyond her own achievements; she is a source of inspiration for aspiring judokas in Cuba and around the world. Her story is one of perseverance, excellence, and unwavering dedication to her sport. As she steps onto the mat in Paris, she carries not just the flag of Cuba, but the hopes and dreams of many who look up to her in her country and beyond.
