Algeria, historically the most successful nation at the African Judo Championships, is making its experience tell as it hosts the event in Oran, winning three of the five golds available on day two. Having seen home judoka Faiza Aissahine win the women’s U52kg title on the opening day, the hosts were able to celebrate further triumphs today in the men’s U73kg, women’s U57kg and women’s U63kg categories.

Messaoud Dris took gold in the men’s U73kg after beating compatriot Houd Zourdani in the final, with bronzes going to Morocco’s Hassan Doukkali and Aleddine Ben Chalbi.

The women’s U57kg title went to Yamina Halata, who beat Christianne Legentil in the final, with South Africa’s Jasmine Martin and Ivorian Zouleiha Dabonne winning bronzes.

Two-time African champion Amina Belkadi lived up to her top seeding in the women's U63kg class, beating Morocco’s Sarah Harachi in the final as Cameroon’s Audrey Biock and Meriem Bjaoui of Tunisia took bronze.

Morocco’s Achraf Moutii won the men’s U81kg, beating Tunisia’s Wajdi Hajji in the final as bronze medals went to Algeria’s Aghiles-Imad Benazoug and Abdelrahman Abdelghany of Egypt.

Tunisia’s Nihel Landolsi beat home judoka Souad Bellakehal in the women’s U70kg final, with bronze medals going to Angola’s Maria Niangi and Zita Biami of Cameroon.

Algeria lead the medal table with four out of six golds so far.

The African Judo Championships continue on Saturday with the five heaviest categories.
