Cuban Yanet Bermoy steals show at World Championships
Teenager Yanet Bermoy of Cuba upset veteran Frenchwoman Frederique Jossinet to win the under 48kg gold medal at the World Judo Championships on Sunday. Dennis van der Geest completed a memorable tournament for the Netherlands by winning his country's third gold but Japan still topped the medals table after Midori Shintani won the women's open category with a stunning throw to fell Karina Bryant of Britain.
There was better news for the British with Craig Fallon's victory in the under 60kg division to become their first world champion since 1999.
Bermoy is competing in her first season of international competition but she looked as if she had fought at this level all her life brushing aside far more experienced opponents.
The 17-year-old struggled to find a big technique in the final against Jossinet but out-foxed her wily opponent to force three decisive penalties.
