Two courageous efforts did not make a difference at the end for Ontario’s Michal Popiel, who lost both his bouts today at the World University Judo Championships, in Moscow. The Mississauga native first lost in overtime in the 66 kg event to Mindia Khomizuri from Georgia, before dropping his repechage bout to Vladimir Preradovic from Croatia.

"I wanted to do my best and I believe I did,” says Popiel, a student at the University of Texas. “It wasn’t enough to make it to the medal rounds. It’s been a good first experience at the University Worlds. I’ve learned much today and I took note of certain aspects I will have to work on.”

In his opening bout, Popiel held his own and the two belligerent entered overtime on a scoreless draw. Khomizuri finally opened the scoring with a koka in overtime, thus putting an end to the bout.

“Michal is a tough competitor but we also noticed very quickly that the Georgian was very good,” says Canadian coach Patrick Roberge. “I thought Michal would come out on top since he was showing great things while his opponent was turning empty. (Khomizuri) then came out of nowhere with his bout winning move.”

Khomizuri made it to the semifinals, which made Popiel available for the repechage rounds. “Michal again was strong but he was awarded a penalty in the final minute which forced him to open it up after. (Preradovic) then scored a yuko and started to block Popiel off, knowing only time was standing on his way to victory.”
