Isabelle Pearson from Boucherville, Quebec was an early casualty in the 63 kg event of the 2004 Judo World University Championships in Moscow today, losing her opening bout to Gen Li Un from North Korea on a yuko. “It’s not been great but I’m still satisfied with my performance,” says Pearson. The Canadian wasn’t selected for the repechage round after the North Korean dropped her second round bout in the final minute to a Brazilian.

The 22-year-old Physiotherapy student from McGill University was trailing after the first minute of action and her opponent patiently stayed away, letting the time fly without being caught for her lack of aggressiveness.

“It was a tight bout. I thought I still could win it at the end with penalties,” says Pearson. “If the bout lasted a few more seconds, I believe I could have won. I still had much energy in the last minute and I gave it all. I managed a few good attacks but the Korean fell on her belly instead of falling on her back.”

Tomorrow, Ontarian Michal Popiel will be in action in the Under-66 kg event.
