European champion Avtandili Tchrikishvili (GEO) was unbeatable in his homeland as Dusseldorf Grand Prix winner Travis Stevens (USA) had to settle for silver. Tchrikishvili countered a ura-nage attempt after 90 seconds for ippon to the delight of the magnificent home supporters who reacted to every movement of their favourite with encouragement and expectancy.

In the first semi-final Tchrikishvili conquered Tashkent Grand Prix silver medallist Amir GHASEMI NEJAD (IRI) by ippon after four minutes while in the second semi-final Stevens advanced by besting Junior European and Junior world bronze medallist Mammadali MEHDIYEV (AZE) with a yuko and waza-ari.

The first bronze medal was won by Junior World Team Championships gold medallist Ushangi MARGIANI (GEO) who had the better of MEHDIYEV from a yuko scored courtesy of a ko-uchi-gari. The Georgian chalked up three shido penalties (false attack twice and for going out of the area) but held on to grab a place on the podium. The second bronze medal was captured by national championships silver medallist Asaf CHEN (ISR) as GHASEMI NEJAD could not compete due to injury.
