Defending champions Japan powered into the final by winning all three of their matches in the opening session. Japan routed Mongolia 4-0 but found hosts Azerbaijan to be a more difficult assignment as they lost two contests in a 4-2 victory.

The unified Korean team (below), a world first in judo, made history and started with an emphatic 4-0 win over Romania and then matched that result against the Netherlands in the quarter-finals.

France defeated Brazil in a 4-2 thriller to claim pool C having started their day with a win over Hungary with the same scoreline.

Russia ran through pool D in dominant fashion. The hosts of 2014 World Judo Championships beat Kazakhstan 4-0, Great Britain 4-2 and overwhelmed Germany 4-1.

In the first semi-final Japan defeated the unified Korean team 4-0 while in the second semi-final France overpowered Russia 4-1.
