Thirty of the medallists at the Grand Slam of Paris in 2012 reached the top 8 at the London Olympic Games. Of the 30 athletes, 18 won a medal. As only athlete Teddy Riner won both Paris in 2012 as the Olympic title. The podium U78kg in Paris gave the best indication for London where Aguiar, Harrison and Tcheumeo were also on the podium, accompanied by British surprise Gemma Gibbons.

Six winners in Paris 2012 made it to the podium in London. Idalys Ortiz and Teddy Riner have a medal at all three World Championships in the Olympic cycle, in fact Teddy won all three world titles. At the World Championships from 2009-2011 a few athletes won three medals, but didn’t make it to the podium: Tomoko Fukumi, Misato Nakamura, Georgii Zantaraia and Annett Meszaros, now Breitenbach. But Kim Jae-Bum who also won three World medals between 2009 and 2011 won gold in London, Hiroaki Hiraoka silver and Yoshie Ueno bronze.

Of last year’s October winners at the Grand Slam in Paris, only Andrey Tcheumeo had won an Olympic medal in London. It says enough about the new generation with dominating judoka as Naohisa Takato, Hiroyuki Akimoto, Urantsetseg Munkhbat, Majlinda Kelmendi and Tina Trstenjak, athletes ripened like a good French wine, ready to be tasted in Rio.

This year Teddy Riner won't participate at the Grand Slam.
