The Paris Grand Slam, one of the most anticipated events on the judo calendar, will proceed without two of its most celebrated stars: Teddy Riner and Clarisse Agbegnenou. Both athletes have confirmed their absence, signaling shifts in their immediate priorities.

Teddy Riner, the legendary French judoka, officially announced his withdrawal from the event while competing in Montpellier with his PSG teammates. Originally included in the French selection, Riner explained his decision:

"I won’t be competing in Paris. It’s official because I’m not ready. This isn’t the focus for this season, and at the start of 2025, I’ll be heading to the operating room to address injuries I’ve postponed dealing with—particularly my right elbow. I delayed the surgery for the Champions League, but now it’s time to focus on recovery."
The ten-time world champion and five-time Olympic gold medallist has also made changes to his coaching team, revealing that Eric Despezelle, a former -60kg judoka, will now take on the role of his trainer. Riner’s withdrawal underscores his focus on long-term goals, prioritizing recovery and preparation for future challenges, likely aiming toward the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
Adding to the reshuffle, Clarisse Agbegnenou, another iconic figure in French judo, will also skip the Paris Grand Slam. While specific reasons were not disclosed, her absence further alters the anticipated lineup.
Agbegnenou, a two-time Olympic champion and five-time world champion, is a key figure in French judo and her withdrawal will be felt by fans eager to see her return to action
