Tachimoto takes heavyweight national title
Megumi Tachimoto finally reached the pinnacle of Japanese women’s judo. Tachimoto defeated Kanae Yamabe by decision avenging a loss from last year’s final to capture the title at the All-Japan women’s championship on Sunday at Yokohama Bunka Gym in the single-elimination tournament with no weight classes.
“Up to today, it was always tough for me to watch the award ceremonies. I’m so happy,” Tachimoto said.
Tachimoto’s determination to secure a title she had been pursuing since high school was shown earlier this month when, one day after winning the over-78 kilogram title at the All-Japan invitational weight class championships for the first time, she was back at practice.
To build strength and stamina, she trained with male judoka at her alma mater, Tokai University.
