Georgian judoka Jaba Papinashvili became World Junior Champion in Zagreb in 2017. In April 2017 he won silver at the European Cup U21 in St. Petersburg where he lost to Gurbanl, his opponent in the World Championships final. He took silver at the Grand Prix in Antalya in 2018. He captured a bronze medal at the 2018 Junior World Championships in the Bahamas. He captured a bronze medal at the Grand Prix in Tbilisi in 2019. He took bronze at the European U23 Championship in 2019 in Izhevsk. He bagged a gold medal at the Grand Slam in Baku in 2021 and bronze in Paris in 2022.
