Chinese judoka Yao Xiong has represented her country since 2014 but only made her first international trip last year when she was selected for the Paris Grand Slam and Tokyo Grand Slam, two of the toughest competitions in the sport. She took silver at the Grand Prix in The Hague in 2018. She won the Asian Open in Hong Kong in 2018. She took silver at the European Open in Oberwart in 2019. She clinched a silver medal at the gold Grand Prix in Hohhot in 2019

Rank outsider Jon Yu Sun of the Democratic Peoples Republic of Korea defeated world number 29 Xiong Yao (CHN) to win -48kg gold on day one of the Hohhot Grand Prix 2019. The world number 113 picked up two shidos after making a lethargic start but improved as the contest entered the final minute and eventually broke the deadlock with 25 seconds left via a waza-ari score from a ko-soto-gake and held on for her first IJF World Judo Tour triumph. Maryna Cherniak of the Ukraine won her second Grand Prix title with victory over World Championships participant Xiong Yao (CHN) in the U48kg final. Xiong, who finished fifth at the Asian Games and seventh at the Tokyo Grand Slam last year, opened the scoring by rolling over her Ukrainian opponent who had failed with a uchi-mata attempt for a waza-ari score.
