Some big surprises at the All Japan Championships this weekend in Fukuoka. In the men’s U90kg Daiki Nishiyama defeated Mashu Baker. Baker is the World Championships bronze medallist of Astana in 2015. Baker is ranked 4th in the World Ranking, Nishiyama 11th, so a decision has to be made by the technical staff of the All Japan Judo Federation. Read more

Havana Grand Prix bronze medallist Beka GVINIASHVILI (GEO) won the battle of the new generation of fighters in the -90kg category. Budapest Grand Prix silver medallist Krisztian TOTH (HUN), 20, and GVINIASHVILI, 18, served up a high-quality final which required golden score after both youngsters cancelled each out with a shido each for passivity after five minutes. The Georgian took from a waza-ari score and lifted TOTH back to his feet to share a warm embrace in a great show of respect between the two who will no doubt develop their friendship and rivalry on the tatami over the next decade.
