Canadian judoka Christa Deguchi is the 2019 World Champion. She won bronze at the World Championships in Baku in 2018 as first Canadian woman. She won the Grand Slam of Ekaterinburg in 2019. Christa won two World Junior Championships medals and gold with the team of Japan. Japanese-Canadian parents and speaks English. She won the Grand Slam in Paris twice, Pan American title and Grand Prix in Hohhot and Zagreb many times in the final against teammate Jessica Klimkait. She won two Panam titles.

The IJF will continue its end-of-year tradition of awarding a prize money bonus to all 14 world number ones on the final IJF World Ranking List for 2019. The bonus, which was first introduced in 2016, will see the world number one’s in each of the 14 weight categories scoop a bonus of $10,000 per judoka. Read more

Deguchi and Fonseca wrote history for their countries

Both judoka Christa Deguchi (CAN) and Jorge Fonseca (POR) earned their country’s first world judo titles and in doing so wrote their names into the history books. Deguchi won four of her five contests by ippon and beat former teammate and defending world champion Yoshida Tsukasa (JPN) in the final by a waza-ari score from a tani-otoshi. Read more

Looking at the World Ranking, this year wasn’t so different than 2018. Especially in the women’s division some of the same leaders top the IJF World Ranking. Not surprisingly World Champions Daria Bilodid and Clarisse Agbegnenou who retained title in Tokyo reign in their categories. Read more

Christa Deguchi writes history for Canada

Canada has its world champion! Christa Deguchi starred in the U57kg category as the 2018 world bronze medallist won the world title from defending champion Yoshida Tsukasa (JPN) to make history for Canada. Montreal Grand Prix winner Deguchi, 23, was a teammate of Yoshida, also 23, until she switched from representing her homeland of Japan to Canada, the nationality of her father who was matside all day long as a photographer. Christa Deguchi wants to stunt in Japan

Is it going to be a historic day for Canada. Christa Deguchi is eager to win the first ever world title for Canada on day three of the World Championships on Japanese soil. Obviously Japanese World champion Yoshida Tsukasa is the favourite as current title holder, but she lost to Deguchi in the final of the Grand Slam in Paris, so it’s all possible as the morning session was completed.
