Canadian judoka Christa Deguchi is the 2019 World Champion. She won bronze at the World Championships in Baku in 2018 as first Canadian woman. She won the Grand Slam of Ekaterinburg in 2019. Christa won two World Junior Championships medals and gold with the team of Japan. Japanese-Canadian parents and speaks English. She won the Grand Slam in Paris twice, Pan American title and Grand Prix in Hohhot and Zagreb many times in the final against teammate Jessica Klimkait. She won two Panam titles.

Canada has its world champion! Christa Deguchi starred in the U57kg category as the 2018 world bronze medallist won the world title from defending champion Yoshida Tsukasa (JPN) to make history for Canada. Montreal Grand Prix winner Deguchi, 23, was a teammate of Yoshida, also 23, until she switched from representing her homeland of Japan to Canada, the nationality of her father who was matside all day long as a photographer. Not only Canada was looking forward to the super clash between Jessica Klimkait and Christa Deguchi. The two Canadian rivals are the numbers 4 and 7 in the IJF World Ranking but both capable of winning an Olympic medal, a historic Olympic medal.
