Judoka Hela Ayari of Tunisia is the African Champion U52kg of 2016, 2015, 2014 and 2012. She won the African Open in 2016 in Tunis. Ayari also won Junior African titles. The judoka won bronze at the Mediterranean Games in Mersin in 2013. She won silver at the 2015 All African Games in Brazzaville. Hela Ayari (TUN) was number 1 of the IJF World Ranking for juniors U52kg in 2014.

Tunisia wins medal table at African Championships Egypt surprises

Host nation Tunisia showed its power in judo with five gold medals and 16 medals in total. The home crowd was satisfied with Saturday’s gold for Hela Ayari U52kg and Faicel Jaballah who captured the double in this tournament winning both plus and Open category. Sensational were the four gold medals for the Egyptian men, at the second and last individual day Egypt added another two titles, for the first time since 2009 four different Egyptian judoka won a gold medal at the African Championships. African Judo Championships help qualifying for Rio2016

Athletes from 31 nations will fight for the essential Qualification Points to participate at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio. The African Championships in Tunis are more important than ever and in the 14 weight classes each point can help the athletes to Rio. Last year at the African Championships the current host Tunisia was amazingly strong picking 50% of all 16 available medals including Open category. Eight titles for the current host nation rises the expectations. Tunisia and Algeria ended equal in the men’s division but in the women Tunisia won with 5 gold medals. Read more


First IJF World Ranking released for 2016

The latest IJF Ranking doesn’t have too many changes compared to last year. This weekend’s African Open in Tunis. Winners Nora Gjakova, Kilian Le Blouch and Marie Eve Gahie kept last year’s point as they prolonged their title. Lucie Louette won silver this weekend after she won the title in 2015, no harm done. The ones who really benefit were Hela Ayari of Tunisia who climbed into the top 20, from 22 to 16. Her compatriot Nihel Cheikh Rouhou kept her fifth place. Read more

Hela Ayari on course for Rio with gold in Tunis

The first Olympic qualification event of the year is held this weekend in Tunis. The second edition of the African Open hosts 274 athletes from 52 nations. France is leading after day 1 with two gold medals. Host nation Tunisia cheered for the gold medal of Hela Ayari who captured the first ever female gold of any international event in Tunis.
