Kazakh judoka Yeldos Zhumakanov got world fame when he surprised with a fifth place at the World Championships in 2015 in Astana. Also at home Zhumakanov won the Grand Prix in Almaty in 2013 U66kg which was one of his career highlights, among various international World Cup medals. He took a silver medal at the IJF Masters in St. Petersburg in 2017. He clinched a silver medal at the Asian Pacific Championships in Fujairah in 2019. He captured a silver medal at the Grand Prix in Budapest in 2019.

Mongolian Kherlen Ganbold wins back-to-back IJF event

Kherlen Ganbold of Mongolia recorded his second IJF World Judo Tour win in as many weeks as he responded to being left out of Mongolia’s team for the Worlds in the best possible way. At the Grand Prix in Budapest Ganbold trailed to Asian-Pacific Championships silver medallist Yeldos Zhumakanov (KAZ) by a waza-ari score but fought his way back into the final and subdued his Asian rival by ippon. Japanese Joshiro Maruyama was the sensation today as non seeded athlete in the final of this Grand Prix in Almaty. In the final Maruyama was again in the lead with his great uchimata’s but it seems that the kumi kata is almost irrelevant for the athlete who throws from each corner with or without judogi in his hand. Vazha Margvelashvili was a cut above the opposition in the U66kg category as he won four of his five fights by ippon to tantalise and delight the home fans at the Grand Prix of Tbilisi. Margvelashvili, Dusseldorf Grand Prix bronze medallist and just 22 years, sealed his first IJF gold medal in a dream result as he defeated gritty Glasgow European Open bronze medallist Fabio Basile of Italy with a ko-soto-gake earning waza-ari with a minute left on the clock and the result was never in doubt.
