Chinese judoka Wen Zhang made her IJF debut in 2012 but has only competed once at the World Championships. The 2014 World Championships athlete has lost a Grand Prix bronze medal contest on four occasions (2012, 2013, 2015 and 2018). Zhang defeated Gulnar Hayytbaeva (TKM) by ippon at the Worlds before taking eventual world champion Clarisse Agbegnenou (FRA) the distance in a narrow defeat. She took silver at the Asian Open in Hong Kong in 2018. Zhang won bronze in Oberwart and Antalya in 2019.

Polish Julia Kowalczyk topped an IJF podium for the first time in her career and did it the hard way after a 10-minute duel with world number 20 Kaja Kajzer (SLO). Junior World Championships bronze medallist Kajzer was disqualified after six minutes of golden score for passivity as the 2017 Baku Grand Slam bronze medallist from Poland celebrated the her biggest win on the IJF circuit.
