Nuno Saraiva won the African Open in Casablanca in 2015. He won his 1st World Cup medal in 2014 in Madrid. As cadet and Junior he won European bronze U73kg. Bronze at the World Junior Chams. in 2014 in Miami. He won silver at the Grand Prix in Tashkent in 2015. Bronze at the Grand Prix in Samsun in 2016.

The Portuguese Judo Federation announced its team for the 2016 Olympic Games. This time Telma Monteiro is not seeded for Rio. An injury at the end of the year prevented her from fighting so far in 2016. Her last event was the Grand Slam of Paris in October 2015. The Portuguese star will go for her fourth Olympic Games, she debuted in 2004 in Athens and fought eight Olympic contests so far, but was much more ambitious. The gold at the Grand Prix in Samsun for men U73kg was for the first time ever U73kg for a Polish man. Damian Szwarnowiecki took the victory in Turkey by defeating Kim Chol Gwang in the final. The North Korean was caught by a left ko-ochi of the young Polish talent who won two European U23 titles. Read more

Uzbek Mirali Sharipov won the Tashkent Grand Prix for a second time as he overwhelmed Junior World Championships bronze medallist Nuno Saraiva (POR) in the -73kg final. The 21-year-old Portuguese judoka had no way out from a tate-shiho-gatame and remained pinned to the tatami for 20 seconds by Sharipov. The world number 59 beat the world number 81 inside 45 seconds to send the crowd into raptures – as he did in 2013 - while Saraiva will be content with his day’s work having won his first IJF senior medal.
