Israelian lightweight Shira Rishony opened 2019 with a victory at the Grand Prix in Tel Aviv. She won the Grand Prix in Tashkent in 2013 and European Open in Tallinn in 2014. In 2015 she won bronze at the Grand Slam of Paris and in 2016 she opened with silver in Havana. She won a bronze medal at the Grand Slam in Baku in 2017. She clinched a bronze medal at the Grand Prix in Hohhot and Montreal in 2019. She claimed bronze at the Grand Slam in Brasilia in 2019.

Japanese judoka Koga Wakana captured the gold medal at the Grand Prix in Montreal U48kg. 18-Year old Koga was not a favorite at the start of the day. It must be said that she had a glorious opponent in the semi-final as she was opposed to Paula Pareto (ARG), who came to Montreal only for gold. Rank outsider Jon Yu Sun of the Democratic Peoples Republic of Korea defeated world number 29 Xiong Yao (CHN) to win -48kg gold on day one of the Hohhot Grand Prix 2019. The world number 113 picked up two shidos after making a lethargic start but improved as the contest entered the final minute and eventually broke the deadlock with 25 seconds left via a waza-ari score from a ko-soto-gake and held on for her first IJF World Judo Tour triumph. Shira Rishony of Israel gave her country a dream start for their inaugural Tel Aviv Grand Prix as she defeated The Hague Grand Prix winner Maryna Cherniak (UKR) to win -48kg gold. The home crowd did not have long to wait to see their judoka clinch top spot on the podium as Rishony won her second Grand Prix title and first since 2013 to star in the first final on day one.
