John Newman was British judoka who became European Champion in 1957 and 1958. Officially named John Edward Brian Newman, was teacher and broadcaster: born Kingsbury, Middlesex 13 December 1935; Language Supervisor, BBC Japanese Service 1969, Programme Organiser 1969, Head 1970-91; MBE 1988; teacher, Nihon University School of Medicine 1991-93; married 1964 Elizabeth Richards (two daughters; marriage dissolved 1984); died London 18 May 1993.
