Akari Ogata won the World Junior Championships U20 in 2009 in Paris. Ogata won silver at the 2013 World Championships in Rio and bronze in 2010. She won the Grand Slam Paris in 2010 U78kg. In 2015 she won bronze at the Grand Slam of Paris. She won bronze at the European Open in Oberwart in 2017. Akari Ogata (JPN) was number 1 of the IJF World Ranking for seniors U78kg in 2011 and 2012.

Some big surprises at the All Japan Championships this weekend in Fukuoka. In the men’s U90kg Daiki Nishiyama defeated Mashu Baker. Baker is the World Championships bronze medallist of Astana in 2015. Baker is ranked 4th in the World Ranking, Nishiyama 11th, so a decision has to be made by the technical staff of the All Japan Judo Federation. Read more

World Judo Masters bronze medallist French Audrey Tcheumeo won her country’s first gold medal at the Grand Slam by defeating Tyumen Grand Slam silver medallist Sato Ruika (JPN) in the U78kg final and the French team never looked back. Sato was penalised three times while Tcheumeo was penalised twice and that decided the contest with no scores registered from either judoka. Read more

Olympic silver medallist Gemma Gibbons produced a much-needed return to form in Ulaanbaatar as the British hero sealed the gold medal against top seed Sarah Myriam Mazouz (GAB). Mazouz started with a good ashi-waza attack but Gibbons, who had already defeated two Japanese judoka in the earlier rounds, countered an attack from her Gabon opponent as she changed her body position to send the former flying to the tatami for ippon.
