Hovhannes Davtyan won the IJF Grand Slam Moscow in 2009 as his first big prize and Grand prix in Zagreb followed 6 years later. He won three European medals starting in 2007 with silver in Belgrade and in 2012 in Chelyabinsk. He took bronze in Montpellier in 2014 U60kg and bronze in Havana in 2016.

French lightweight Walide Khyar grabs sensational European title

French 20-year old Walide Khyar was the big sensation at the first day of the European Championships. He won the European title in the men’s U60kg. France hadn't had a European Champion in this class since Sofiane Milous won the title in 2010. Khyar is the fifth judoka of France to win the title, Philip Pradayrol won two titles in 1990 and 1991. Orkhan Safarov is the favourite for the European title on Thursday in Kazan. The weight division for men U60kg has a strong field but without Beslan Mudranov the reigning champion. Sarafov has a rather easy draw and French Vincent Limare could be his opponent in the semi final. He will face Ahmet Sahin Kaba of Turkey as first opponent, not an easy start. Beslan Mudranov is the new European Champion. The Russian took the title in the men’s U60kg final against 2013 Champion Amiran Papinashvili and Mudranov regained his title of 2012. None of the athletes scored in regular time and it was the Georgian who received the decisive penalty. Read more
