Ivan Nifontov is the 2009 World and European Champion and 2012 bronze Medallist of the Olympic Games U81kg. He won world bronze in 2014 and silver at the European Games 2015. He was born in Kazakhstan but moved a lot as a child. He won the Grand Prix in Budapest in 2016. With Yewara Newa he won the Golden League in 2017 in Ankara.

Chair for IJF athlete commission still an option for Teddy Riner

French star Teddy Riner could retain his position as head of the Athletes' Commission after the International Judo Federation (IJF) selected him for a role on the body. Riner, who won his ninth world title during the event here and stretched his winning run to 134 matches, was one of four athletes hand-picked for a position on the Commission by the IJF. Read more

World number 19 Maresch and world number 20 Nifontov were the first and second seeds respectively and both came through the preliminaries unscathed to book a fascinating final. The head-to-head series was locked at 1-1 coming into the gold medal match with their previous meetings coming in 2008 and 2012. Former world, European and Grand Slam winner Nifontov marked his first IJF outing of 2016 with the top prize as he rolled over his German rival for a waza-ari and held down the top seed for 15 seconds with a kesa-gatame to win by wazari-awasette-ippon. Germany strong at prelims day two at GP Budapest

German athletes qualified for three finals today at the Grand Prix in Budapest. Laura Vargas-Koch was able to reach the final after a victory against Sanne van Dijke (NED) U70kg, she will now face Rodriguez Elvismar of Venezuela who defeated Karen Nun-Ira of Japan in the semi. Both are qualified for the Olympic Games. Read more

Russian Olympians overall satisfied about practise in Madrid

This weekend the Russian team had a good practise in Madrid. A usual stepping stone, same like in 2012 when the Russian also collected a few gold medals. In their preparation to the Rio Olympic Games Russia took five gold medals, four of them from likely Olympians Irina Dolgova, Ksenia Chibisova, Renat Saidov and Olympic champion Tagir Khaibulaev. Russian team expected to be announced after IJF confirmation

Almost traditional the Russian team is testing a few athletes at the European Open in Madrid. In 2012 the Russian team sent the full 2012 Olympic men’s team to Madrid: Galstyan, Mogushkov, Nifontov, Denisov, Khaibulaev and Mikhailin. Only Isaev didn’t fight. This year we may see the 2016 Olympic team. Both the men and women have strong names. Read more
