Jochen Bech showed his talent at an early age with a bronze medal at the Spartakiade 1966 in Berlin. He was twice DDR champion and won the 1977 final at the Potsdam Tournament against the eventual World champion Bernard Tchoullouyan and he took bronze with the European Cup team of SC Dynamo Hoppegarten. Bech was coach of SC Berlin that won the European Cup in 1992. He coached such successful athletes such as Michael Pinske and Sven Maresch as well as Tino Bierau, Robert Dumke and Nico Kanning.
